Phra Pathom Chedi

Nakhon Pathom ∞ [map] (population 50,000), 56km (35 miles) west of Bangkok, is often called the oldest city in Thailand, and its name in fact means ‘First City’. It may once have served as the power centre for the Dvaravati kingdom, a collection of Mon city-states that flourished between the 6th and 11th centuries AD. The town’s world-famous Phra Pathom Chedi, at 127m (417ft) the tallest Buddhist monument in the world, is said to encase a 6th-century stupa within its huge ochre-glazed dome.
